The queen is said to have exclaimed this to the Countess of Nottingham (Catherine Howard) on her (the Countess') deathbed. According to what is reported, the Queen gave a ring to the Earl of Essex that he was supposed to send her back if he was in trouble and to have pledged herself to assist him if he should do so. But earl faced with execution entrusted the ring to Lady Scroop, who handed it to the Countess, for presentation to the queen. But the Countess, out of hatred to the earl never presented the ring until on her own deathbed. Source: The History of England Under the House of Tudor (1759) by David Hume, Vol. II, Ch. 7
